Martians in My FruitCrate
Posted on November 18, 2007
You may be saying: "What are those oval-shaped green things with little fronds on the ends in the Harvest Flyer and Organic crates this week?" They are not Martians. They are not ergonomically-correct feather dusters for miniature tea sets. They are not magic seeds that if planted in the light of the full moon will grow into dancing Brazilian zombies. They are called Feijoas. (Pronounced "Fee-oh-ahhs.") They are also called Pineapple Guava. Here is what is important to know about them: they taste really good. These organic Feijoas are from a small farm in Southern California near Los Angeles. They are native to Southern Brazil and since the early 1800s have been cultivated around the world. The Feijoa is ready to eat when slightly soft and when the jellied sections in the center of the fruit are clear. Depending on the variety this may happen on the tree or within 2-5 days of natural fruit drop. The fruit is unripe when the jellied sections are white and past its best when they are browning. (Unpleasant flavors develop when browning occurs and the fruit should be discarded - that's when they turn into zombies.) Handle the Feijoas very gently - as you would ripe peaches. You can cut them in half and scoop out the inside or even quarter and eat like an orange. Don't eat the skin as it is unappealing (ha-ha.) Share with friends! Enjoy and be fruitful!
Check out this week's mix of fruit.
Gifts: Even people who speak 10 languages send FruitGuys fruit crates for holiday gifts because "Gemutlikeit" just doesn't say "thank you" or "happy holidays" like fruit does. Send a FruitGuys full or half crate for the holidays this year. We'll write the note on our card stock or yours - whichever you prefer. Give us a call at 1-877-378-4863 for more information or email us.
