Go-Go Godzilla October 8, 2007

Posted on October 08, 2007

My son is beginning that rite of passage that many go through at one time or another in their lives - the Godzilla obsession. He can tell you about the battle of Godzilla and Mecha Godzilla, the appearance of Mothra, the possible locations of Monster Island and the etymology of Gi-mantis. "It's Giant and Mantis put together - get it." My wife, a hardcore b-movie fan, is happy to encourage him. "Godzilla is about what is best and worst in all of us." This is about the time I look up from my dinner in disbelief. "How can you say this and attack me for emulating Zan and Jana - Wonder Twin powers activate, form of a ridiculous thesis on the power of Godzilla!" A dinner table debate then ensues where Godzilla tries to crush the Hall of Justice and The Justice League fights back. Is this normal? I guess you can say that we are passionate about hokey early 80's cartoons and the cultural relevance of b-movies. Where does this passion come from? It must have been those passion fruits (you were wondering how I was going to get to fruit, weren't you?) from our super-secret farm supplier. I love the passion fruits that this farmer grows for us. He has allowed his passion fruit vines to grow across an old lemon orchard and uses the trees as a natural trellis. His fruits are always beautiful in their purple way. They are a bit odd looking and you might even wonder if they are smaller versions of the pods in Invasion of the Body Snatchers but don't fear - they are just fruits and wonderful ones at that. Passion fruit is a fragrant fruit and is best eaten when cut open and scooped out. They are ripe when they are a bit shriveled. Passion fruits are rich in Vitamins A and C and are a good source of potassium and iron.
The seeds are high in fiber as well. (Although to be super honest I'm fond of the juice in the fruit but not really the seeds themselves.)

Fall Transitions:
Our fruit mixes are changing rapidly at this time of year. You'll notice we are done with peaches and nectarines and are now heavily into the local apples and pears (and things like passion fruits) that define the fall season. Check out our mix at: In the mix.
