Cute as a Pear Fairy

Posted on September 17, 2007

My girls are on the playground twirling with their arms held out. "Let's play the Fairy Game," they say. They don't say it very loudly but somehow, almost telepathically, all the six-year-old girls within a 60-foot radius start twirling in synch. I'm now in an alternate universe and about to get blasted with a fire ray. A little girl shouts: "I'm the Electric Fairy!" She twirls, jumps in the air, and lands ninja-style while shooting an electric bolt from her hands. Another one chimes in, "I'm a Rain Fairy," and sprinkles her fingers down to the ground melting those around her. A four-year-old nearby says, "I'm a baby fairy" and all the jumping and attacking girls go soft. "Let's take care of the baby. Come here little baby, are you cold?"
This is kind of how I felt when going through the fruit with Dan this week. Stone fruit is winding down now as we go into fall and we are expanding our apple and pear mix. I was tasting Honey crisp and Tsugaru and Golden Supreme apples when he passed me a baby Bosc pear and I got all cuddly. "Awwww, it's really cute," I said. He looked at me a bit skeptically. "I've been hanging out with six-year-old girls," I said trying to deepen my voice.
Whether or not the baby Bosc or the Honey Crisp inspires the six-year-old girl in you to scream, "Aahhh, how sweet!" Devouring a pear with health-crazed abandon is still an option and can be done with an adult sense of self. Go to our website to learn about your crate's fruit mix and where it is grown. West and east coast crates have different mixes and we always buy as local as possible.
