Let's Make a Modern Myth December 4, 2006

Posted on December 04, 2006

Demeter, wife of Zeus, mother of Persephone, goddess of the harvest is biting her nails. Her hair is a mess and she's still in her pajamas/toga. She looks like she's been up for months. Persephone, walks in listing to an iPod.
"Seph! Where have you been these last few months? I've been worried sick. Every time I hear the siren song of a healer's chariot whir past I can't help but imagine you unconscious on the side of the road somewhere."
Persephone: "I've been out."
Demeter: "Where for Zeus' sakes?"
Persephone: "The underworld."
Demeter slouches back into her chair. "And what did you do while you were with Hades?"
Persephone: "Nothing you didn't do as a kid, MOM!?!"
Demeter, taking a breath: "This is not about me or my tattoos. I'm just worried here. Did he give you anything while you where there?"
Persephone points excitedly to her new iPod and pulls out two ticket stubs from a concert. She's bouncing up and down on her toes from excitement. "He took me to The Smashing Pomegranates last show!!!! They played a set that lasted three months long. It was amazing. And, oh yeah - we ate pomegranates the entire time."
Demeter puts her head in her hands knowing that her daughter, who has eaten of the Pomegranate, is now required by mythological law to spend a third of the year in the underworld. This makes her sad but then she realizes that without her daughter in the house, she can take that vacation to Barbados for a well deserved break from constantly creating the harvest. This is why we have winter.
The End.

Pomegranates in the Harvest Flyer and Staples +1 crates this week:
At this time of year we like to mix it up a bit. We've found some pomegranates that we thought you might like. To make it easy here are some instructions on how to eat. The juice does stain so we recommend careful eating. However the cranberry/raspberry taste is wonderful and refreshing. Step 1: Cut off the top. Step 2: Score the outside along the membrane grains that you can see from inside at the top. Step 3: Put in a bowl of water while opening (the water stops the juice from spreading and will dislodge the seeds after opening). Crack the scored wedges back to get seeds. You can scoop the seeds, pull them out with your fingers or collect from the bowl after they have dislodged (about 5 minutes of soaking time). Chew them to get the juice. Some people like to swallow the seeds others do not - it's your call. Enjoy and be fruitful!!
