The Power of Fruit November 13, 2006

Posted on November 13, 2006

My son was so excited when I came home from work one night last week. He and my wife had been to Paxton Gate on Valencia street in San Francisco. It's a store of oddities and other amazing wonders. For a young boy, it's like walking off of Nocturn Alley into Olivanders wand shop out of the Harry Potter novels - nothing says magic quite like Victorian taxidermy, bug collections under thick glass, and large preserved squids in well-lit specimen jars. I walked into the kitchen and he ran up holding a box - "Open it," he said excitedly. He waited patiently as I struggled with the box then he blurted out, "It's a fruit clock! Just plug it into a piece of fruit and it really makes the clock tell time." Half an hour later we'd punctured 5 pounds of fruit just to make sure that the apple, bananas, oranges, pears, and all the FruitGuys fruit could power the clock. And if fruit can power a clock. . . think what it can do for our bodies (you knew that was coming).
I hope you have had a chance to enjoy the Arkansas Black apples and the Winesaps. The Arkansas Black was the apple I wrote about last week and has that dark red - almost purple color to. It is round in shape. The cherry flavor found in the skin is really worth tasting. The apple is considered an heirloom variety and has a short season, so be sure to try it out. In other fruit news, we have put both red and green grapes in the Harvest Flyer / Horn of Plenty crates this week. They are both sweet but with different textures. The red grapes have a nice crisp snap and the green grapes are a bit softer but also sweet. We are coming to the end of grape season for California so make sure to enjoy these while they last. You'll also find organic Fuyu Persimmons from Gabriel Farms in the mix as well. Remember you can eat the Fuyu firm or soft.
